Marie James is a community activist and advocate who has dedicated her life to empowering women and children in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego. Through her work with the Barrio Logan College Institute, she has helped countless individuals overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
Early Life and Education
Marie James was born and raised in Barrio Logan, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in San Diego. As a child, she witnessed the challenges that many of her neighbors faced, including poverty, crime, and lack of access to education. These experiences inspired her to pursue a career in social work.
After graduating from high school, Marie attended San Diego State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in social work. She then went on to earn a master's degree in education from the University of California, Berkeley.
Work with the Barrio Logan College Institute
In 1994, Marie co-founded the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI),a nonprofit organization that provides educational and social services to the community.
BLCI offers a variety of programs, including after-school tutoring, college counseling, and job training. The organization also provides support services to families, such as food assistance and counseling.
Marie has been the executive director of BLCI since its inception. Under her leadership, the organization has grown to serve over 1,000 students and families each year.
Empowering Women and Children
Marie's work with BLCI has focused on empowering women and children. She believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and injustice that many families in Barrio Logan face.
Through BLCI's programs, Marie has helped countless women and children achieve their goals. She has helped students graduate from high school and college, get jobs, and become leaders in their community.
Marie is a role model and mentor for many women and children in Barrio Logan. She is a tireless advocate for their rights and a champion for their dreams.

Marie's work has been recognized by numerous organizations and institutions. She has received the following awards:

- The Aspen Institute's Pahara-Aspen Fellowship
- The San Diego County Women's Hall of Fame
