Benjamin's Life in Slavery

Benjamin was born into slavery in Maryland in 1828. His enslaver was a man named Richard Bennett. Benjamin worked on Bennett's plantation, where he was forced to perform hard labor. He was beaten and whipped if he did not work hard enough. Benjamin lived in constant fear of being sold away from his family and friends.

Benjamin's Decision to Run Away

In 1852, Benjamin decided that he could no longer忍受the horrors of slavery. He planned his escape for months, carefully gathering food and supplies. On January 11th, Benjamin slipped away from Bennett's plantation and began his journey to freedom.

Benjamin traveled north, following the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped enslaved people escape to freedom. Benjamin traveled by foot, by boat, and by train. He often had to hide from slave catchers and bounty hunters.

After a long and dangerous journey, Benjamin finally reached Canada in 1853. He settled in the town of Chatham, Ontario. Benjamin was free at last.
