Thomas Erskine May (1815-1886) was a renowned constitutional lawyer and historian. He was born in London, England, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. The Life and Work of Thomas Erskine May

Thomas Erskine May was born on 8 February 1815 in London, England. He was the son of Thomas May, a prosperous merchant, and Charlotte Erskine, the daughter of David Erskine, 2nd Baron Erskine. May was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied law. After graduating from Cambridge, May worked as a lawyer and journalist. In 1847, he was appointed Clerk of the House of Commons. He held this position for over 30 years, and during that time he wrote several important works on constitutional law.

May's most famous work is his Treatise on the Law, Privileges, Proceedings and Usage of Parliament, which was first published in 1844. The Treatise is a comprehensive guide to the British constitution and parliamentary procedure. It has been used by generations of parliamentarians and constitutional lawyers, and it remains one of the most authoritative works on the subject.

May also wrote a three-volume Constitutional History of England since the Accession of George III, which was published between 1861 and 1863.
