- Needle
- Thread
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Measuring tape or ruler
Getting started:
- Thread the needle. Cut a length of thread about 18 inches long. Thread it through the eye of the needle and tie a knot at the end.
- Secure the fabric. Place the fabric pieces together with the edges lined up. Pin them together to hold them in place.
- Start sewing. Start sewing from the inside of the fabric, taking small stitches. Insert the needle into the fabric from one side, then bring it out on the other side. Continue sewing until you reach the end of the seam.
- Finish the seam. When you reach the end of the seam, tie a knot in the thread and cut it off.
Machine Sewing Basics
Machine sewing uses a sewing machine to stitch fabric together. It is faster and more efficient than hand sewing, and it can produce stronger seams.
Materials you'll need:
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Measuring tape or ruler
Getting started:
- Thread the machine. Follow the instructions in your sewing machine manual to thread the machine with thread.
- Prepare the fabric. Place the fabric pieces together with the edges lined up. Pin them together to hold them in place.
- Set up the machine. Select the appropriate stitch for your project. Adjust the tension and stitch length according to the fabric you're using.
- Start sewing. Start sewing from the inside of the fabric, following the guide on the sewing machine. Hold the fabric taut as you sew to prevent puckering.
- Finish the seam. When you reach the end of the seam, backstitch to secure the thread. Cut the thread and remove the fabric from the machine.
