William Livingston was a prominent American patriot and statesman who played a key role in the American Revolution. He served as the first governor of New Jersey and was a delegate to the Continental Congress. Early life and education

William Livingston was born on November 25, 1723, in Albany, New York. His father, Robert Livingston, was a prominent lawyer and politician. His mother, Margaret Beekman Livingston, was the daughter of a wealthy Dutch merchant. Livingston received a classical education at Yale College, where he graduated in 1741.

Legal and political career

After graduating from college, Livingston studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1748. He quickly established himself as a successful lawyer and became involved in politics. In 1754, he was elected to the New York Assembly, where he served for several years. In 1774, he was elected to the Continental Congress.

American Revolution

Livingston was a strong advocate for American independence. He served on the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and he was one of the signers of the document. Livingston also served as the first governor of New Jersey from 1776 to 1790. As governor, he oversaw the state's war effort and helped to establish a stable government.

Later life and legacy

After the war, Livingston continued to serve in public office. He was a member of the New Jersey Constitutional Convention in 1790, and he served as a U.S. senator from 1791 to 1793. Livingston died on July 25, 1790, at the age of 66. He is buried in Princeton, New Jersey.
